Rating How Ratings Are Used

CNN's public editor has concluded that using ratings to determine news value is fraught with potential problems. The most obvious issue: Nielsen ratings reflect what people watched yesterday, and relying on those numbers as a basis for news decisions today detracts from the very definition of "news." Other problems include:

• Likely undercounting of viewers during the pandemic, when Nielsen representatives couldn't test the technology in homes
• Numbers reflect some but not all viewing on devices other than televisions, leading to an undercount of young and urban viewers
