AI Generator Generates Anime Controversy

November 15, 2022

An AI model based on the work of a recently deceased anime artist has drawn criticism from illustrators, writers, and fans. South Korean illustrator Kim Jung Gi, known for an innovative style of comic book art and for live-drawing complex scenes from memory, died unexpectedly in October at age 47. Critics believe the model is a theft of the artist's work, and many creators and fans of anime and manga are denouncing both AI technology and the people who use it. The controversy may be a bellwether for broader AI ethics and liability issues related to art.
